Citizen Science

cleanup The reserve often has opportunities for community members to assist in the restoration and or monitoring of our estuarine and coastal habitats. Planting and monitoring marsh grass, picking up and documenting marine debris at the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup and monitoring bird populations during the Great American Backyard Bird Count and the Christmas Bird Count are examples of projects that the reserve has partnered with the community to date.

marsh restoration Another worthy citizen science activity is the Adopt-A-Stream Program administered through the MS Department of Environmental Quality. This program trains local citizens to monitor our coastal and inland waterways. You or your group can become a Stream Team by simply adopting a stream or river in your area. Stream Stewards may then choose to do seasonal litter pickups, storm drain stenciling, streamside management and restoration, advocacy work, or any number of other activities that will help protect and restore Mississippi's waters.
